About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. If you’re that person feel free to reach out and leave a comment or follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Bloglovin‘.

Social media has revolutionized the way we learn about beauty and skincare. From viral TikTok trends to influencer product recommendations on Instagram and Reddit, it’s easier than ever to find advice on how to care for your skin. But how much of this information is accurate—and how much is outright misleading or even dangerous?

The Problem with Influencer Skincare Advice

Influencers, regardless of their follower count, are not necessarily experts in skincare. Many are not dermatologists, estheticians, or cosmetic chemists; they are simply individuals sharing their personal experiences. While some genuinely aim to educate their audience, others are primarily motivated by sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and trends rather than science-based facts.

Here are some of the most common issues with skincare advice on social media:

1. Misinformation and Overgeneralization

One-size-fits-all advice doesn’t apply to skincare. Yet, influencers often promote products as “miracle cures” without acknowledging that everyone’s skin is different. A product that works wonders for one person may cause irritation, breakouts, or allergic reactions for another.

2. The Promotion of Harmful DIY Remedies

Platforms like TikTok and Reddit are filled with DIY skincare hacks, many of which can be dangerous. Common examples include using lemon juice to lighten skin (which can cause severe irritation and sun sensitivity), applying toothpaste to acne (which contains ingredients not meant for skin), or over-exfoliating with harsh scrubs that damage the skin barrier.

3. Unregulated Product Endorsements

Many influencers are paid to promote products without disclosing their partnerships, making it difficult for consumers to know if a recommendation is genuine or financially motivated. The lack of regulation allows misleading claims to spread unchecked.

4. Pseudoscience and Fear-Mongering

Skincare myths often go viral because they tap into fear. Terms like “toxic,” “chemical-free,” and “clean beauty” are frequently misused to scare consumers away from certain ingredients without scientific backing. The reality? Everything is a chemical—even water! Many “feared” ingredients, such as parabens and silicones, are safe when used correctly and have undergone rigorous testing.

How to Find Reliable Skincare Information

With so much misinformation online, how can consumers ensure they’re getting accurate skincare advice? Here are some safer, science-backed ways to educate yourself:

1. Trust Dermatologists and Skincare Experts

Follow board-certified dermatologists and licensed estheticians who rely on peer-reviewed studies rather than trends. Look for experts like Dr. Shereene Idriss, Dr. Ranella Hirsch, or The American Academy of Dermatology, who provide factual, research-based insights.

2. Check Credible Websites

Reliable sources such as the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) provide science-backed information on skincare and cosmetic products.

3. Read Ingredient Lists and Research Products Independently

Instead of relying on influencer hype, take a closer look at a product’s ingredient list. Websites like INCIDecoder and Paula’s Choice Ingredient Dictionary break down ingredients to help consumers understand their benefits and potential risks.

Separating Fact from Fiction – FutureDerm

4. Be Skeptical of “Too Good to Be True” Claims

If a product promises instant results or sounds like a miracle cure, approach with caution. Good skincare takes time, and no single product can erase wrinkles overnight or cure acne in a day.

5. Ask Your Dermatologist or Licensed Skincare Professional

If you’re unsure about a product or treatment, the safest route is to consult a professional who understands skin science and can provide tailored advice based on your skin’s needs.

Final Thoughts

While social media can be a valuable tool for discovering new skincare products, it is also a breeding ground for misinformation. Consumers should be cautious, fact-check claims, and prioritize science-backed sources over viral trends. Your skin deserves care based on research, not just marketing.

By taking a more critical approach to skincare advice, you can protect yourself from misleading claims and make informed choices that truly benefit your skin’s health.

If You’re Wondering My Ulta Order Has Been In Limbo Since the 7th

A fast way to piss me off is to give me the run around. Ulta continues to be on my sh1t list lately with their really delayed shipping.

I don’t understand Ulta’s shipping. There’s absolutely no rhythm or reason to it. Some days I’ll place an order and within two days I’ll have it. Other days it’ll take near a week and a half to get. They also never use the same shipping method twice. I placed about five orders so far during the 21 Days of Beauty Sale and I’ve gotten them shipped via Fedex, Lasership, USPS, and UPS. You never know which carrier is going to bring the package.

But my real issue is I placed an order on March 7th for some items and unfortunately, it’s been in limbo since with FedEx. My status has been “Left FedEx origin facility” since that time. Last Friday I decided it was time I contact Ulta. I was told to wait until Monday to see if it arrives. It didn’t.

On Monday, I contacted them again and said Hiiiiii! It’s me! Remember me? The one who’s packaging didn’t arrive! I was told, “It’s still in the time frame to arrive check back with us Thursday”. Tomorrow is Thursday and I have a feeling I still won’t see movement on that box. I checked it today and we still have the same status. Don’t get me wrong Ulta is far superior to Sephora as far as shipping goes, rewards, etc…but sometimes they just make me rage. Remember my Homeworx Candle drama? I feel like sometimes their customer service is a little wacky. If I ordered something on the 7th something is wrong if it isn’t here at least by the 14th. But nope, they just refuse to do anything.

I likely won’t dispute it and I’ll give them until perhaps Monday but after that I’ll call again and see what new and interesting story they tell me. I love you Ulta but in recent years your customer service has really gone down the drain.

Do better ok?

How’s your experience with Ulta Customer Service been?

Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Sticks Alienating Fans like the Champion They Are

The Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Stick Collection is set to launch March 21st online at ulta.com! Cream Shadow Sticks from Urban Decay? How innovative. Not. Urban Decay, we’ve been over this time and time again you can’t fix what isn’t broken! You already did a line have a line of 24/7 Eyeshadow Sticks why are you introducing a new Naked Eyeshadow Stick Collection? Also, why do you continue to alienate your fans with these boring ass shades?

Listen, we all know “Naked” is a household name. We all know and appreciate you put “Naked” on the map with the original launch of the Naked Eyeshadow Palette. But it’s time to refresh yourself, it’s time to reboot. You’ve done Naked to death! We have Naked Cherry, Naked Honey, Naked Concealer, Naked Foundation, we get it, you’re a exhibitionist and a bit of a nudist and we love you for it. But remember when you were bold, vivid, outrageous, and edgy? I could get on board with a line of Naked Eyeshadow Sticks I can’t lie to you! I’m of an age where I appreciate softer shades but remember your old fans that loves shadows like Mildew?

And hey, even if you aren’t interested in your old fans how about garnering the attention of some new ones? Shake things up with Gen Z, get them out of their clean girl era, and let your freak flag fly with some crazy, vibrant cream eyeshadow sticks.

Sadly, that’s a no go with the new line of Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Sticks but hey, it’s a thought! Unfortunately, Urban Decay isn’t doing anything that Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier hasn’t done a hundred times over. Again, don’t get me wrong I love a good shadow sticks but we have a lot of these on market already and I can’t see myself paying Urban Decay for a selection of shades I already own. At $25 they aren’t cheap and the collection is dominated by some frosty whites, bones, and creams which won’t be flattering on me. Would I buy these on sale? Hell yes. Mark them down to $10 bucks and I’d consider them but not at $25. This formula promises a long-wear of sixteen hours with a moisturizing formula that glides on and can be used as a base for powder shadows or worn alone.

Shades include:

  • Blurred Out (beige matte)
  • Exposed (dusty rose matte)
  • Peach Bum (peachy pink shimmer)
  • Private Album (cool taupe shimmer)
  • Sinnocent (rich brown matte)
  • Tasteful (cool brown shimmer)
  • Toasty (cooper bronze shimmer)
  • Top Off (light champagne shimmer)

I’m taking bets in the backroom how long it’ll be before these hit the sales rack! Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Sticks launch shortly online. Will you be grabbing them?
